2022 Al Sharq Youth Conference
Motto of the Conference: ‘Unleashing Potentials’
Date: August 13-14, 2022
Venue: Pullman Hotel & Convention Center
Overview
As the world sees the unprecedented impact of the Covid-19 pandemic followed by the invasion of Ukraine in 2022 on social, economic, and political norms, the opportunity for alternatives has become evident – and much needed to replace obsolete ideas and structure pertaining to many dimensions that have dominated the status quo.
More than ever, we need a world where ideals of justice and equilibrium are established, and cooperation between people and nations exists in a fairer and more balanced world. This year, Al Sharq Youth International Conference will provide a venue to discuss the unprecedented global risks we face.

The world did not recover from the devastating economic effects of Covid-19 before since receiving another blow from the Ukraine war. Strong economies have suffered as much as developing economies. This panel will explore the global economic crisis and the potential opportunities it carries for the Al Sharq region. This session is set to discuss the following questions: How has the era of Post Covid-19/Ukraine war accelerated economic recession? What are the upcoming scenarios to expect? What implications will it have on the future of political regimes in the Al Sharq region? The way out: Are there any potential opportunities for the Al Sharq region during this economic crisis? 10:45 Strategic Panel: Societal Interconnectivity Versus Authoritarian Consolidation: The Contest over Restoring Political Order In Al Sharq Region10:45 - 11:45he struggle over restoring political order is the most fiercely contested one in the Al Sharq region. Popular revolt against the autocratic and dysfunctional political systems during the Arab Spring led to a decade-long crisis of stability and legitimacy. Capitalizing on the popular fatigue and the global recession of democratic ideals, the resurgent authoritarianism in the Al Sharq region is attempting to renew its validity. For decades, the strategy of the rules elites in the Al Sharq region has been to trade freedom for security, and political rights for the promise of development, attempts which have obviously not suceeded. At the societal level, the region has never been as interconnected as it is now since the advent of modern nation states. Societal interconnection provides fertile ground for new imaginations, premised on the idea of a shared destiny and future. In the face of such societal interconnection and consciousness, the attempt to resurrect a new version of an authoritarian status quo is no more than a fragile relic from the past. Indeed, social interconnection and solidarity is the most effective antidote to authoritarian consolidation. Therefore, the endeavor to establish an efficient, yet legitimate and inclusive political order at both the domestic and regional level is the only way out from the current chaos.Speakers: Hassan Aourid, Liqaa Meki, Tesnim Khriji Chirchi

13:05 Future Horizons Panel: Steering the Wheel: Towards a Just, Inclusive and Sustainable Future13:05 - 14:05Decades of development models in the Al Sharq region have so far failed to provide just, prosperous and sustainable realities for societies. Rather, the region seems to be set on a destructive path complicated by conflict, climate change, global economic crises and a post-fuel transition. How can we rethink the Al Sharq path to development and move into directions that are more just, inclusive and sustainable taking into consideration the existing challenges and opportunities? Speakers: Diego La Monda, Karim El Gendy, Prof. Adeel Malik, Prof. Mehmet Asutay, Rouba Mhaissen
14:05 Youth Leads: The Art of Bridging and Belonging14:05 - 14:20We are living in a networked world formed of complex systems where everyone and everything is connected, economic actors, political actors, non-state actors and more, all weaved together. One cannot navigate this world and take the right decisions without understanding it. In this session, we attendees explore how to understand the world as a network. The session includes a spotlight on the OPEN initiative which maps and analyzes political and economic networks in Syria. Al Sharq Youth is more than just a gathering of young people. It is a meeting of minds from all over the world. It is a network which unites young people who are inspired and motivated to make a positive difference, and to take action to build a better future.
Al Sharq Youth creates a space that draws on lessons of the past by incorporating our historical struggles, successes and failures, so that future generations are equipped with the tools needed to move forward with new solutions.
The Al Sharq Fellowship program is a very well structured and designed leadership program that provides direct access to learning from leading scholars in the field. The diversity in the cohort is great!
Al Sharq Youth has in a very short space of time become a truly global network of youth. The various issues the network embraces in its program of action give hope for the future of the world.
Al Sharq Forum provides the environment for young leaders to articulate and have a reason discourse. We have to remind them that they are the youth associated with idealism, with principles, with conviction, not to necessary support the excess of the present regimes. They have to have tight values and principles and understand that new technology means new knowledge and new frontiers, and at the same time it will only be effective if they retain their core values against oppression, corruption and abuse of power, because the young must affect change only when they have these core values and new understandings of knowledge and technology, only then they really can be real ambassadors for change in our societies
When you attend a conference like Al Sharq Youth Annual Conference, you are engaged and you are hearing every word and you get everything out of it. Use that as a force. Use this conferences and these meetings as a force to push yourselves forward. The real accomplishment here is the networking, not with the experts but with the youth just like you, who are coming up in the world. In 10-15 years’ time you will remember these people and they will be in high places and they will be influential people in their own way.
It was wonderful to meet the dynamic and promising young members of Al Sharq Youth during their last annual conference which was well done. They are the young leaders of our society.
I have learned a lot from my team members in the Al Sharq Fellowship Program. The group is so diverse and I feel that I’m part of a greater community.
Al Sharq conference in Kuala Lumpur was a great experience for me to get connected with young leaders and changemakers of Asia and the MENA region. A unique opportunity to see the reality with new eyes. Thanks! Shukran! Tarima kasih!
Young people have hope and optimism, that’s where Al Sharq has rightly emphasized on the FUTURE. It was a profound experience at Al Sharq Conference, meeting youth and leaders all over the world, speaking the same language, owning their future.
In the Al Sharq Fellowship Program I’ve had the chance to meet brilliant minds in a perfectly designed program to create (or discover) new narratives about one's life and the world we are living in.
I highly recommend joining Al Sharq Youth for all young leaders looking for support, ideas and inspiration to continue their work to change the world.
The Al Sharq Youth conference was an amazing experience and it is an opportunity to meet the future leaders of the world today.
It was a pleasure to meet so many inspiring and committed people at seeking to positively shape our world.
Al Sharq Youth is establishing the ground on which the Al Sharq civilization will once again stand among the nations.
In just a few years since it was launched, Al Sharq Youth has emerged as one of the most dynamic and inventive platforms in the Middle East, the network is contributing to the making of a better future for the youth and all the peoples of the Mashriq.
I was absolutely blown away by the atmosphere at Al Sharq Youth Annual Conference. I felt truly inspired by the attendees and my fellow speakers pushing the boundaries of technology, politics, journalism, art, fashion, and so much more in Al Sharq region and beyond. These are changemakers.
It was refreshing to see so many young and inspiring people in one place. We had long and useful talks in between the panels, decided to work on a new projects and most importantly became friends.
They say the future belongs to those who prepare for it today. The Al Sharq Youth Annual Conference is doing just that, bringing together leaders from the East and the West to engage in critical conversations that are shaping the future for generations to come.
It's amazing to feel like travelling to many places while I am in the same hall, getting to meet some inspiring humans from the East and the West .. feeling small compared by the achievements and the experiences surrounding me. As a traveler, Al Sharq Youth Conference was a rich adventure for me, but this time by only wearing my suit and sitting in the same seat
