Digital Media and Society: Shaping the Future in a Connected World

Riyaad Minty – October 29, 2020

Session summary

In this discussion, Mr. Riyaad Minty talks about the hyper-connected world of Digital media and its impact on our lives in the present time and the future. Despite the fact that the future is highly unpredictable, the goal is to link the dots between how mankind has functioned historically, how it is now operating with the influence of technology, and how, in turn, it is shaping society.

Mr. Minty outlines three challenges and opportunities that society needs to be attentive to. He begins by discussing “the eco chambers effect” in the digital space, creating the illusion that everyone thinks the same way. He moves on to discuss the “information overload”, which causes people to feel overwhelmed on a regular basis. Lastly, he addresses the issue of “representation” and how it can program our brains and ways of thinking, contributing to negative and positive stereotyping.

Mr. Minty also speaks about the opportunities in these networks to have a hand in directing the future, if they were well used and not allowed to take control of our lives.
