2022 Al Sharq Youth Conference

Motto of the Conference: ‘Unleashing Potentials’

Date: August 13-14, 2022

Venue: Pullman Hotel & Convention Center

Overview

As the world sees the unprecedented impact of the Covid-19 pandemic followed by the invasion of Ukraine in 2022 on social, economic, and political norms, the opportunity for alternatives has become evident – and much needed to replace obsolete ideas and structure pertaining to many dimensions that have dominated the status quo.

More than ever, we need a world where ideals of justice and equilibrium are established, and cooperation between people and nations exists in a fairer and more balanced world. This year, Al Sharq Youth International Conference will provide a venue to discuss the unprecedented global risks we face.

    • 10:45 Strategic Panel: Societal Interconnectivity Versus Authoritarian Consolidation: The Contest over Restoring Political Order In Al Sharq Region10:45 - 11:45he struggle over restoring political order is the most fiercely contested one in the Al Sharq region. Popular revolt against the autocratic and dysfunctional political systems during the Arab Spring led to a decade-long crisis of stability and legitimacy. Capitalizing on the popular fatigue and the global recession of democratic ideals, the resurgent authoritarianism in the Al Sharq region is attempting to renew its validity. For decades, the strategy of the rules elites in the Al Sharq region has been to trade freedom for security, and political rights for the promise of development, attempts which have obviously not suceeded. At the societal level, the region has never been as interconnected as it is now since the advent of modern nation states. Societal interconnection provides fertile ground for new imaginations, premised on the idea of a shared destiny and future. In the face of such societal interconnection and consciousness, the attempt to resurrect a new version of an authoritarian status quo is no more than a fragile relic from the past. Indeed, social interconnection and solidarity is the most effective antidote to authoritarian consolidation. Therefore, the endeavor to establish an efficient, yet legitimate and inclusive political order at both the domestic and regional level is the only way out from the current chaos.Speakers: Hassan Aourid, Liqaa Meki, Tesnim Khriji Chirchi

Rather, the region seems to be set on a destructive path complicated by conflict, climate change, global economic crises and a post-fuel transition. How can we rethink the Al Sharq path to development and move into directions that are more just, inclusive and sustainable taking into consideration the existing challenges and opportunities? Speakers: Diego La Monda, Karim El Gendy, Prof. Adeel Malik, Prof. Mehmet Asutay, Rouba Mhaissen
