Wadah Khanfar – 25 February, 2020

Session Summary

The idea of future, how to fix it and how to change it has not yet matured. As we are going through a state of political tyranny, oppression, deterioration and degradation in all fields, it crates for us an atmosphere of despair and darkness. But we must be aware that reform is not just a unilateral act but rather a renewed and continuous process that scrambles between multiple power forces which leads to a reform of the religious, philosophical, cultural and political discourse. By addressing the problematic of change, a comparison can be done between the changes that occurred during the 15 th and 16 th centuries and today.

Five main points can be mentioned:
1. The change during the previous times was a long and continuous process, but today major changes are taking place in a very quick manner.
2. The elites were controlling change. But nowadays, we are experience a great role played by the popular masses in controlling nowadays ongoing change.
3. Technology back then did not go beyond printing and translating books, on the contrary it has become a critical element in driving change in today’s world.
4. The Economic, Technological, and Cultural Globalization distinguishes our modern time from the previous times.
5. The standards of living has considerably evolved, thus material life has took charge of our lives.

The Arab Spring is a revolution that has not ended and the world is changing today more than ever, and for this, we must be intellectually and scientifically prepared for the moment when the balance of power will change.
